The Best Way to Watch Team GB, According to the British

Which TV service provider is the best when it comes to watching the London 2012 Olympic Games? That is a question that Digital TV Signup sought to find the answer to. The website did this by conducting an independent survey into the viewing habits of several UK residents; 746 in all.

After having discovered that the majority of people were watching coverage of The Olympic Games in Standard Definition, the company then queried the providers of the TV services across the country. With Sky being widely regarded for their outstanding provision of first class deals for High Definition viewing, it may come as a surprise to readers that they were in fact the TV service to which most subscriptions were held!

Of those 746 individuals who participated in the survey, 39.01% have been watching Team GB grabbing gold, left, right and centre, in SDTV thanks to BSkyB. Virgin Media accounted for 19.3%, Freesat for 12.47%, BT Vision for just 3.35%, and the remaining viewers were using an alternative service which accounted for the remaining 25.87%. Sky is therefore the clear favourite when it comes to staying up to date with Olympic coverage in the UK.

The survey also discovered that, though the viewers tend to be aged between 18-34 years old, it is in fact women who are predominantly staying up to date with the latest results, with 42% of Sky viewers being women. They, however, are aged between 35-54 years old.

Of both genders, it was found that The Midlands and Wales (44.68%) and Northern Ireland (46.15%) had the highest percentages of Sky viewers. The North and Scotland accounted for 38.52% and the South for 35.5%. The majority of those watching were also found to have higher education or advanced qualifications, such as 47.7% having A-Levels and 47.5% having a degree/HND. Interestingly, though, it also found that 45.45% had no qualification.

Of those households, the incomes are reflective of the level of qualification; although these results are perhaps less reliable as there were a number of participants (34.31%) who chose not to disclose their individual annual income. That being said, their employment showed that the majority were in supervisory, managerial or skilled worker roles. Equally, the majority of those with a Sky subscription had children or several people living in the household as well.

Overall, Sky was the clear favourite TV provider for watching coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games according to those UK residents who took part. Their professional roles and their salaries were also higher than those who subscribed to alternative providers, with Virgin Media being second. It would also seem that those TV services offering more interactivity in their products and a greater range of channels are the preferred among those households with children or with several people living under one roof.
